First Aid Qualification Requirements

Purpose
To provide clear guidelines to ensure that the educators /educator assistants must hold the first aid qualifications and carry out their duty of care in providing first aid for minor injuries, illnesses through to life saving first aid treatment following an accident causing injury or risk to life of the children who are under our education and care.

Scope
These guidelines will apply to the Approved provider, Nominated supervisor, Certified supervisor, educators, staff, volunteers.

Objectives
To ensure that the educators hold required first aid qualifications to provide required first aid treatment in case of emergencies and provide a safe & healthy learning environment to the children being educated and cared for.

Policy
We at FIRST IDEA FAMILY DAY CARE SERVICES, ensure that each family day care educator and family day care educator assistant engaged by or registered with the service r 136(3)

  • holds a current approved first aid qualification
  • has undertaken current approved anaphylaxis management training
  • has undertaken current approved emergency asthma management training.

Each family day care educator and educator assistant must hold all three qualifications.

  • All co-ordinators, supervisors must also hold the first aid qualifications as per regulation 136(3)
  • FDC educators and staff will ensure that they attend the required training update for CPR every twelve months

Procedures
The approved provider/Nominated supervisor/Certified supervisor are responsible for

  • Explaining the policy to the educators/Educator assistants/Volunteers at the time of information session
  • Ensuring Approved provider, nominated supervisor, Certified supervisor, educators, staff, volunteers hold valid first aid qualifications which are current while they are working with the service
  • Maintaining a register of qualifications of Approved provider, nominated supervisor, Certified supervisor, educators, staff, volunteers to ensure everyone is meeting the regulation

Educators/ Educator assistants/Volunteers are responsible for

  • Ensure that they hold a current approved first aid qualification
  • has undertaken current approved anaphylaxis management training
  • has undertaken current approved emergency asthma management training
  • Not to provide education and care to children if their above-mentioned qualifications are expired
  • Keep track of their currency of the above-mentioned qualifications and book a course and gain the valid current qualification before their current qualification expires
