Epilepsy

Objectives
To ensure that the appropriate action is taken for a child who has been diagnosed with epilepsy. An Epilepsy Management Plan should be completed upon enrolment with the FIRST IDEA FAMILY DAY CARE SERVICES.

Scope
These guidelines will apply to the Approved provider, nominated supervisor, Certified supervisor, educators, staff, students on placement, volunteers, parents, children and others attending the service.

Procedures
Families should provide information on the child’s health, medications, allergies, their doctor’s contact details.
Provide an Epilepsy First Aid Plan approved by their doctor upon enrolment.
Guideline must be followed when administering medication and treatment in emergencies and a medication Administration record should have been completed and signed.
If emergency treatment is required for a child having a convulsion or an epileptic fit, administer first aid or medical treatment according to the child’s epilepsy management plan and an Ambulance may be called at the FDC educator’s discretion
Individual child’s action plan is to be readily available
